Kinga Jaczewska is a Polish performer and maker. She studied at the London Contemporary Dance School, the Northern School of Contemporary Dance, and P.A.R.T.S., where she graduated in 2012. She has worked with artists such as Karl Van Welden and Andros Zins-Browne, and is currently developing her own work. Kinga is interested in bringing focus to what happens in-between what we see as focal points or defined events: the so-called grey zones and to the process itself.

Meanwhile

‘Meanwhile‘ is a (video) installation for floating sculptures where meantime – time with no significant meaning to itself, seen barely as a connecting tissue between more defined times and events, is the main focus. Highly sensitive to motion, transparent objects illuminate the invisible to human eye air currents as well as choreographies created between themselves and in relation to the viewer.

With ‘Meanwhile’ Kinga wonders whether such exposure can influence our perception of time and space. The work is also an attempt to with a language of movement, physicalize the hovering time which moves independently to the clock measured time.

Other questions that have been guiding the work:

How to make these hovering times and space accessible to the spectator?
How to bring focus to the ‘in between’ zones without turning them into a significant event?
How to allow viewer’s perception to float and to lessen the need to label whatever is being perceived?

This work is being created in a very close collaboration with Rosemarie Allaert.

PRL

PRL (Polish Random Leisures) takes its inspiration from an intriguing and turbulent phase of Polish history between 1952 and 1989: a period marked by contradictions and known as the communist era of the Polish People’s Republic. PRL investigates how this political system – and more precisely its attitude towards its citizens – has influenced and resulted in today’s globalized, capitalistic society. Kinga Jaczewska’s aim is to share her (personal) history – ranging from family anecdotes to the general political context of the past decades – with the audience, on a personal as well as universal level. She wants to connect the communist culture and its human interrelations with her individual background rooted in both communist and capitalistic systems.

Grey

“Grey could be the most intriguing of all colors precisely because no surprises are expected of it. It is a color through which one turns into another but which is no longer one nor the other. It is at all times in movement. Grey is the most tentative and ambiguous of colors and the least absolute of any – it is difficult to imagine a pure grey. Grey is the constant that allows all other colors to happen and to disappear. It is essential.”

Grey is a continuation of Kinga Jaczewska’s research based on constant movements and silent transformations. Kinga is fascinated by motions that exist without prior organization or choreography and that continue even when unobserved. She is mainly triggered by movements that, in their quality and rhythm, have the potential to – even if momentarily – shift the way we experience time. Focusing on the physical body and its constant motions, Grey aims to trigger our perception of movement, stillness and time.
