Tuur Marinus was born in Antwerp in 1981. He received a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from Sint Lucas Antwerp before training as a dancer/choreographer at P.A.R.T.S. in Brussels from 2004 to 2008.

Tuur worked as a dancer for a.o. Vincent Dunoyer, They Are Here and Fabian Barba. Together with the contemporary dance collective Busy Rocks he created a.o. “Dominos and Butterflies”). In his own name he made the performances “Still Animals” and now “TH LNG GDBY” among others.

In addition to his work in the performing arts, Tuur is working with his brother Flup on a trajectory in the visual arts.

Belgisch Congo Belge

In a series of miniature paintings Tuur and Flup Marinus copy their complete stamp album ‘Belgisch Congo Belge‘ in oil paint, page by page. The work consists of a highly esthetic range of images, an explosion of colours arranged in a play of recurrence and difference. The series bears witness to different histories and tales: colonialism and our relation towards it, the falling into disuse of postals and stamps, childhood memories, obsessive or escapist forms of philately and pictorial art…

The fascinating and impermeable esthetics of the work, fragile and almost monumental at once, can be read as a symbol of our difficulty to relate to the Belgian colonial history in a profound, non-superficial way.

The publication of the paintings in the Art Paper Collection has been presented during wpZimmer’s OpenHouse (January 2017).

Still Animals (installation version)

In Still Animals the famous studies of Eadweard Muybridge come to life. Iconic photograph series (such as the jumping cat or the flying pigeon) are performed by naked human bodies, subtly manipulated by camouflaged performers. In-between the human and the animal, these intriguing beings look both artificial and organic, they seem to be moving while staying in place. Out of the darkness appears a mesmerizing suspense of jumping and flying bodies, coupled to an almost absurdly low-tech constellation that creates the illusion of effortless motion.

In the installation version, excerpts from the performance are shown in a specific location. It can both be shown in private and public spaces, indoors and outdoors. This may result in a surprising confrontation for the passers-by, or it may become a direct and intimate experience for the viewer when performed in a museological setting.
