Isabel Burr Raty

Isabel Burr Raty is a performance and installation artist, teacher, sporadic curator and sexual Kung Fu coach, with an activist background as a filmmaker working with the Rapa Nui and the Mapuche people in Chile. In all the branches of her work she is interested in the interstices between the organic and the synthetic, between the unlicensed knowledge of minority groups and the official facts. Where she aims to bring to light chapters left out of history books, blur the limits between fiction/reality and re-think the memory of the future. Her artistic research is based on ecological, queer, post-human and de-colonial perspectives, where the sources of inspiration range from Indigenous knowledge to scientific perceptions of matter and bodies.

For the past years her artistic practice has focused on creating conditions for embodied Sci-Fiction to queer commodification processes and open discussions about “value understandings”. For example: the hybrid and mobile Beauty Kit Project, which harvests and recycles human erotic juices for the manufacture of gender-neutral beauty products. Since 2018 Amsterdam Arts Fund partnered her to Waag and Mediamatic. She lectures new and post Media art History at ERG (BE), is a research member in nadine arts laboratory and in the EU project Staying in Touch, curatorial practices of the Future.

Currently she is part of the co-curatorial assemblage in Topos4 wpZimmer Antwerp and apass Brussels; and develops The Power Plant, her new research project which converts sexual energy into electricity. Her works and collaborations have been shown internationally.
