Column (2017)

In the installation Column Karl Van Welden continues his exploration of volcanoes and the consequences of an eruption. Volcanic action produces a variety of sounds and many of those sounds are below the frequency limit of human hearing. Van Welden uses the different volcano acoustics to produce a column of ash. The column is linked to a real eruption by creating a MIDI composition for low frequency in honor of a specific eruption. The first, created for the Saint Michael Church of Sint-Jan Berchmanscollege in Brussels, is called Mt. Saint Helens 1980.
