Thomas Verstraeten
Thomas Verstraeten is an Antwerp-based theatre maker, actor and visual artist – who is also part of theatre company FC Bergman where he creates plays and operas that have gained several national and international accolades.
Throughout his work, Thomas explores and fuses performing arts and visual arts. With his visual practice, the artist explores the stories, both visible as well as hidden, that flow out of the movements of the city and its inhabitants.
And it’s through his more performance-based practices that he transforms the ordinary into something extraordinary – theatralized.
In September 2021, Thomas Verstraeten joined with a team of collaborators are working on “Familiestraat”: a performance centering a life-size replica of Familiestraat in cardboard. Together with 200 local residents Verstraeten creates a six-hour performance in which a whole year passes by. From cold winter nights to sultry summer evenings. Familiestraat is a performance about the influence of the big on the small and vice versa. A poetic and fragile attempt to understand life.
