Begüm Erciyas

While studying molecular biology and genetics in Ankara, Begüm Erciyas was engaged in various dance projects in Turkey and became part of [laboratuar], a performing arts research and project group. Later, she studied at the Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance in Austria and received the DanceWeb scholarship in 2006. Since then, she has been an active member of Sweet and Tender Collaborations, taking part in several collaborative and collective projects and meetings. She was artist-in-residence at Akademie Schloss Solitude in 2007/08, at K3- Zentrum für Choreographie | Tanzplan Hamburg in 2009 and at the TanzWerkstatt Berlin in 2011. In 2012 she received stipends from the Berlin Senate and the Contemporary Arts Alliance Berlin. In 2014 she was artist-in-residence at Villa Kamogawa / Goethe Institute Kyoto.

Hugvee
The voice is surely an uncanny phenomenon. In the digital age it leaves us constantly in doubt, if a person or a non-person is speaking. In this immersive performance, doubt and conviction change roles in the blink of an eye. Spread out on a hilly landscape, audience engages in a conversation with something that is there and not there at the same time. An artificial voice functions as a mediator, a partner and a mirror to one’s own.
While conversations are constructed word-by-word, impressions are shared, naps are taken, and time is passed, Hugvee is an invitation to suspend eye-to-eye relations and to reposition yourself in direct relation to the non-human.

Voicing Pieces
Voicing Pieces proposes to regard the act of speaking while simultaneously listening to one’s own voice, as a performance. One’s own voice becomes the site of the event. One’s own voice becomes a spectacle, a fascination or a surprise. Isn’t the own voice always inauthentic and uncanny? As the audience listens to their own voice in the frame of a small-size-theater-device, they experience that they have the power to act through their voice, but, more importantly, that their voice acts through them.
By creating a categorical and temporal shortcut between one’s own physical action and its perception, and, by undermining the binary differences between active and passive, performer and audience, Voicing Pieces proposes a fragmented model of subjectivity, as well as a particular means of participation.
